Both parts of this phrase come from Polari (sometimes known as “palare”).

“Riah” is back slang for “hair” and is classic Polari.

Some people argue that the word “zhuzh” has much earlier roots, possibly in Yiddish. It’s also spelled zhoosh, joosh, jhoos.
