Why is “Parky” Cockney slang for “cold”? We had no idea, until a great contrib from Tony Luxton. He says “Parky” is a contraction of “Parquet Floor”.
“Parky” is simply a misspelling of “parquet”.
My first wife was from Canning Town, and she knew all the stuff from that area; her best mate was a Pearly Queen, and her Dad and Uncle were dockers in the London docks.
Speaking of which, one of the Irish navvies drafted in to dig the London Docks was one Mickey Bliss. He was a bit of a hellraiser and everyone in the East End knew his name. Which is why we say, “Taking the Mickey”.
