Mary Whitehouse Cockney Rhyming Slang
Mary Whitehouse is cockney rhyming slang for shitehouse
💬 “I need to lay one in the Mary“
Mary Whitehouse (1910–2001) was a British social activist known for her campaigns against what she perceived as the decline of moral standards in the media.
She was particularly active in the 1960s and 1970s. Whitehouse founded the National Viewers’ and Listeners’ Association (NVALA) in 1965, which later became known as Mediawatch-UK.
Whitehouse was concerned about the increasing explicitness and permissiveness in television and other forms of media, and she campaigned for stricter regulation and censorship.
She believed that certain content, especially sex and violence, was harmful, especially to children and vulnerable individuals. Whitehouse was often criticized for being conservative and overly moralistic, while her supporters saw her as a defender of traditional values.
Despite facing opposition and criticism, Mary Whitehouse remained a prominent figure in the public discourse on media content and decency for several decades. Her influence waned over time, and the media landscape underwent significant changes, with more liberal attitudes towards content regulation emerging in subsequent years.
Mary Whitehouse remains a cultural icon though, and many Brits will understand if you refer to somebody as “a bit of a Mary Whitehouse” exactly what you are trying to convey – somebody stern, conservative, probably Christian, reactionary and intolerant.
Since she was so concerned with “filth on TV”, it’s perhaps not surprising that her name has become associated with shitehouse.
